CURRICULUM
The goals of the Leadership for a Networked World programs are to help participants:
- Understand the theories and practices underlying the transition to a networked world
- Evaluate the major options being pursued to improve how IT-related services are designed and governed, including the pros and cons of these options
- Apply new learning to develop priorities relevant to participants' own organizational and political contexts
The Leadership for a Networked World curriculum is based on research conducted by the Kennedy School's Leadership for a Networked World Program (LNW), directed by Professor Jerry Mechling.
Instructional tools and techniques will include:
- Web tools developed specifically for the LNW Program. Attendees will complete an online diagnostic assessment prior to the start of the course. These assessments will describe the interests and experience of the group, and will provide direction for some of the program's sessions. Based on these diagnostic exercises, each participant will receive a customized reading list of relevant academic and practical materials.
- Case Studies. The curriculum will rely in part on the case method pioneered at Harvard. Case teaching begins with real-world experience, and works through a rigorous examination of that experience guided by a Harvard professor. Through case analyses and interactive discussions, participants learn techniques for application to similar situations they face in their own work.
- Student participation. Interactive sessions allow participants to present the project(s) they are currently working on, and to develop solutions that draw on feedback from the class and professors.
After completing the course, attendees remain members of an opt-in online community that offers updates based on areas of interest, and provides continuing support as students work to implement what they have learned during their time at Harvard.
