Lodging will be available for check-in on Sunday, August 30 with check-out on the morning of Friday, September 11. The program provides breakfast, lunch, and dinner beginning with the opening dinner on Sunday, August 30 and ending with lunch on Friday, September 11. Tuition will include all reading materials, a CENTRAL CD-Rom designed specifically for this program, and the use of a laptop computer throughout the program.
Visa
Applicants from countries other than the United States should note that obtaining a visa can be a time-consuming process, taking up to several months. Please take this into account when applying.
What visa do I apply for?
Our programs are executive training programs; therefore a B-1 non-immigrant visa or business/travel visa, NOT a student or scholar visa, should be obtained. The only letter Harvard University provides is an admission letter to accepted participants which can be used as part of the visa application process.
Accommodations
What are the accommodations for participants?
Participants are housed in graduate student housing at Soldiers Field Park Apartments, located across the Charles River, adjacent to the Harvard Business School. These furnished apartments have two- or three- bedrooms with window air-conditioners. You will have a private bedroom and share a bathroom and kitchenette with one or two other participants. For your convenience, clock radios are provided in each bedroom. A coffee maker, telephone, TV, iron, and ironing board are provided in each apartment. Bed linens and towels are also provided.
Family Members
Can members of my family join me for the program?
We do not encourage family members to join you during the program, since it is an intensive two-week program.
Attire
What is the typical attire for this program?
For classes, casual dress is suggested. You will be sitting in a classroom for long periods of time so you should dress comfortably. For the final dinner (Thursday night of the closing week) “business attire” is suggested. The weather can be quite variable in Cambridge in September so we suggest you dress in layers. Classrooms will be air-conditioned and can be chilly. You should also bring comfortable walking shoes.
Computer Access
Should I bring my laptop?
We will provide laptop computers for the duration of the program.
Local Transportation
Will I need a car?
No. We recommend that you don’t drive in or around the area. It is much easier to get around the city on the public transportation system.
Physical Fitness
Will I have time to workout?
Breakfast is from 7–8 a.m. and study groups convene at 8 a.m. (see attached sample daily schedule). You will have time to work out either very early in the morning or after the last class of the day.
Will I have access to workout facilities?
Program participants are entitled to use certain University athletic facilities.
Schedule
When will I receive the schedule and course materials?
After you have been accepted, you will be provided with instructions for access to the program course page on the internet. The course pages will contain information about everything from registration to advance reading instructions as well as the full schedule.
Can I arrive later in the week?
No. This is not a conference where you sample a little of this session and a little of that. Immediately on Sunday evening, we start laying out the intellectual base of the curriculum, with each subsequent session building on the previous ones. If you show up late, it will take several days for you to catch up.
Do I really have to participate in all of the sessions?
Yes. Harvard Kennedy School admits participants to Executive Education programs with the clear understanding that they will be free of all regular professional responsibilities throughout the program. The faculty believes that attendance by each participant at every session is essential to ensuring that The Practice of Trade Policy makes the maximum contribution both to the individual and the entire group.
Will I work at night during the program?
Yes. Each evening you will have to read and prepare materials for the next day’s class sessions.
When does the program end?
On Friday, September 11, The Practice of Trade Policy will conclude by 1 p.m. Please do not make reservations on flights that depart Boston’s Logan International Airport before 4 p.m. on Friday, September 1.
