James Sutherland is a management consultant in banking and financial analysis and is a First Vice President in the Credit Department of Amalgamated Bank in New York. He has been teaching in the Program on Financial Institutions for Private Enterprise since its inception in 1995, both at Harvard University in Cambridge and in the overseas programs in Egypt (1996) and Mexico (1998, 1999). Prior to becoming a management consultant in 1995, Mr. Sutherland worked for 22 years for the Chase Manhattan Bank, where he gained broad banking experience in lending, credit, general management, marketing, operations, and product development. He was also an instructor for three years in Chase's credit training program. For most of his career, both at Chase and as an independent consultant, Mr. Sutherland has worked in the international arena, primarily in Latin America, but also in Asia, Africa, Europe and the Middle East. On several occasions he has served as a banking consultant for the Retail Strategic Business Unit of Bank Rakyat Indonesia.
